Freediving in Anilao: The Complete Guide

The closest world-class freediving destination to Metro Manila — how to get there, what it costs, what you'll see, and how to join a guided session even as a total beginner.

Short answer

Anilao — the dive coastline of Mabini, Batangas — is about 2.5–3 hours from Manila and is the easiest place near the city to freedive over real reef. The water is calm and protected, the best life sits at 5–15m (perfect beginner depths), and it's diveable year-round, with the clearest water from November to May. Mabini Freediving Club runs guided sessions there: intro ₱2,495, practice/fun dives ₱1,895, with underwater photos and videos included.

WHY ANILAO IS A FREEDIVER'S PLAYGROUND

The reef lives shallow

Anilao is world-famous among divers, and its richest coral gardens and critters sit in the 5–15m range — exactly where freedivers spend their time. You don't need big depth to see the good stuff.

Calm, protected water

Facing Balayan Bay, the Mabini coast is sheltered and beginner-friendly, with easy entries — ideal for first open-water dives and relaxed line training.

Weekend-trip distance

Close enough to Manila for a day trip, relaxed as an overnight. It's the only world-class reef you can dive before lunch and be home for dinner.

Room to grow

The same coastline hosts intro sessions, fun dives, and full Molchanovs and AIDA certification courses — you can start and progress in the same familiar water.

ANILAO FREEDIVING FAQ

Where exactly is Anilao?

Anilao is a barangay and the gateway to the dive coastline of Mabini, Batangas, on the Calumpang Peninsula facing Balayan Bay. When divers say 'Anilao' they usually mean the whole stretch of dive resorts and sites along Mabini's coast — which is exactly where Mabini Freediving Club's open-water sessions happen.

How do I get to Anilao from Manila?

By car it's about 2.5–3 hours via SLEX and STAR Tollway. By public transport, take a bus from Manila or Cubao to Batangas City Grand Terminal (around ₱200–₱250), then a jeepney toward Mabini/Anilao Port, and a short tricycle ride to the venue. We send exact directions to our Lifestyle Freediving HQ (Villa Ebarle, Solo, Mabini) when you book.

How much does freediving in Anilao cost?

With Mabini Freediving Club: Intro to Freediving (open water) is ₱2,495 including instruction, resort/dive fees, and underwater photo/video coverage. Practice sessions and fun dives are ₱1,895. Molchanovs Wave 1 / AIDA certification courses are quoted on the certification pages. Bring or rent gear — equipment is provided for sessions.

Is Anilao good for beginner freedivers?

Yes — it's arguably the best beginner destination near Manila. The water is calm and protected, healthy reef sits in the 5–15m range (perfect first depths), entry is easy, and it's close enough for a day trip or one-night weekend. Non-swimmers can join intro sessions too.

When is the best time to freedive in Anilao?

Anilao is diveable year-round, but the dry season from November to May brings the calmest conditions and the best visibility (roughly 10–20m). Weekends get busy — weekday sessions are quieter if your schedule allows.

What will I see while freediving in Anilao?

Anilao is famous for reef life: dense coral gardens, schooling fish, clownfish, and a world-renowned variety of macro critters like nudibranchs. Much of it lives shallow (5–15m), which is exactly the range freedivers spend time in.

Do I need to be certified to freedive in Anilao?

No — guided intro sessions require no certification or swimming background. If you want to progress, the same site is where we run Molchanovs Wave 1/2 and AIDA depth sessions, so you can return and certify in familiar water.

Can I do a day trip, or should I stay overnight?

Both work. Many students do Anilao as a Manila day trip (leave early, dive mid-morning, head back after lunch). An overnight stay makes it more relaxed and lets you do two sessions — ask us about scheduling a weekend double.

The takeaway: Anilao is the rare world-class reef that fits in a Manila weekend — calm, shallow-rich, and beginner-kind. Come for one guided session and you'll understand why Mabini is in our name.
